Cutting the Cord: Why TV Without Cable Actually Has More Options for Entertainment
Learn what options are available for TV without cable!
It’s amazing to think about how long cable companies had a stranglehold on home entertainment. Sure, we had options such as VHS, then DVD, and now Blu-Ray, and many of us even flirted with LaserDisc for a while. If you wanted a steady influx of movies and TV, the best option for many years was cable.
Then “cutting the cord” came along and the idea of TV without cable began to flourish. There are now so many options for home entertainment thanks to multiple streaming services that most cable users will probably never go back.
Let’s discuss some of the most popular options available.
Netflix
This streaming service is, by all accounts, the one that started the revolution to TV without cable. With thousands of popular movies and TV series available, you would be hard-pressed to be unable to find tons of great content to watch. In recent years, they’ve upped the ante with original movies and TV shows, including several such as Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, Beasts of No Nation, and the Irishman – all of which have earned nominations across various awards!
Hulu
When you’re referring to TV without cable, we wouldn’t blame you if the conversation started and ended with Hulu. While Netflix is busy building up its repertoire of movies, Hulu has taken a different route by making deals with multiple TV shows where each episode would air the following day after premiering on broadcast television. Showing everything from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Shark Tank to Saturday night Live and Fargo, this service is perfect for those who no longer want to limit themselves to a network’s schedule.
Amazon Prime
Everyone assumed that it was only a matter of time before Amazon jumped into the fray to help even more people with cutting the cord. With fantastic movies like Knives Out and popular series such as The Boys, Amazon Prime has quickly positioned itself as a top contender in the world of streaming. They’re already quite experimental in the projects they produce and we’re sure that the best is yet to come.
Disney+
If there was any company with the library of movies and TV shows that could create their own streaming channel of content, then it was Disney – and that’s exactly what they did. The Disney+ service just launched last year, but it has already become a formidable competitor against Netflix and Amazon Prime (Hulu, too, but Disney owns that streaming service as well). With their ownership rights to Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Fox, and their own massive library, they’re definitely helping to continue the TV without cable trend. Baby Yoda is also a plus!
FuboTV
As you might have expected, many streaming services rely on being within a niche category. With FuboTV that niche category is sports. Although it does offer a mix of broadcast networks and cable channels, FuboTV’s most notable focus is on sports networks. While some viewers may be disappointed because it doesn’t include ESPN, there is more than enough for sports fanatics and cable fans to enjoy and appreciate.
Sling TV
If you want to cut the cord but still feel as if you’re enjoying cable, then Sling TV might be your best bet. This service has multiple packages to fit nearly every budget, including premium channels that you can add such as Showtime and Starz. They also have promotions from time to time, such as one that includes Kids Extra, Lifestyle Extra, Comedy Extra, and News Extra for a small additional fee. The versatility of this particular service attracts a lot of viewers who will sometimes see it as a stopgap point between cable and TV without cable.
